The Journey

The Commissar marched across the barracks square artificial arms swinging out, Swinging out straight from the shoulders.
His real hands clutched the frozen carcass of a pig, under cover of a generous over coat. He held the dead animal against his military chest as tenderly as if it were his mistress.
The commissar marched into the Vitebsk, the pink snout of the pig protruded slightly from its wealth of great coat.
Its tip was only three and a quarter inches from the commissar’s nose and the breath, streaming from the man’s nostrils, thawed the bristles around the pigs lips, sensuously.

The Warden

The Warden, a man with a pink beard
Walked into the room in half a second exactly.
Blowing out another match, he struck a pose,
His balance appeared to be phenomenal
At half past three he poured out seven whiskies and one hair lotion.
As if by accident, something appeared on his mind
“What the devil are you doing in that situation!” yelled Mildred from the conservatory where she had been busy scratching her feet.
The Warden, a grim faced, clean shaven, good looking man of fifty-three
Took leave of his senses and disappeared through a ventilator.

Dr Mazawattee

Several times during the course of his journey from Earth to Mars
Dr Mazawattee was beset by a strange sensation –
He felt that he was being followed.
All the way he smoked like a furnace and during the hours of darkness
He read Lolita, Ulysses and The Economics of Everyday Life.
Sometimes he felt he was not being followed.
Eventually he could not distinguish between the feeling of being followed
And not being followed.
He was thankful to reach Mars, a hot bath and a good meal.
